Our Mission
- Why
We Exist
The Miss Black Iowa USA organization exists to
provide a forum for African American women to
showcase their knowledge and talent on a local
and state platform while promoting education and
public service. The organization develops women
who are educated, self-disciplined, empowered,
and who serve as positive role models.
Our Identity
- Who We Are
The Miss Black Iowa USA organization celebrates
strong, committed women of color. By developing
African American women today, we strengthen our
collective tomorrows. As a supporter of these
efforts, Iowa helps to contribute to a hopeful
future by helping African American women develop
and refine personal attributes such as
self-esteem and character, public speaking
ability and confidence that will assist her
throughout her life.
Through these opportunities, African American
women are able to build networks that last a
lifetime. These efforts provide an alternative
to the numerous negative influences confronting
young people today such as low self-esteem, teen
pregnancy, drugs, gangs, increased number of
African Americans dropping out of high school,
etc. African American young women as well as the
community at large benefits significantly by
seeing African American women showcased in a
positive manner.
The organization celebrates scholastic
achievement, community service and leadership
and believes that education is the key to
lifelong success. In addition, education and
leadership is promoted by encouraging higher
education and rewarding community service and
leadership of state delegates.
Our Vision
- We Dream a World
African American women in Iowa are educated,
confident and equipped with the knowledge, skill
and resources needed to achieve academic,
professional and personal success.
Our Approach
- How We Do It
The Miss Black Iowa USA organization provides a
state platform for African American women ages
17 to 27 years, to showcase their knowledge and
talent. The organization takes a “holistic
approach” to helping young African Americans
receive the knowledge, skills and resources
needed to compete in a global economy. The
organization hosts an annual event that provides
opportunities for state delegates to broaden
their options to achieve their educational,
professional and personal goals. All Miss Black
Iowa spokespersons are public servants and take
an active role in helping to improve the lives
of the communities in which she lives.
Community Service
- How We Serve
The Miss Black Iowa USA organization is
committed to community service. Delegates
volunteer their time in a number of venues that
aid efforts to make a positive impact on the
lives of others. Service opportunities range
from promoting early childhood education,
literacy, economic and personal empowerment to
and sustaining healthy lifestyles. Service
projects have benefited such organizations as
American Red Cross, Sickle Cell Society of Iowa,
Read Across American, Children’s Miracle Network
and American Diabetes, just to name a few.
Delegates also serve as positive role models to
help others make informed choices in an effort
to help eliminate barriers that may plaque their
lives.
Winners of official "Miss Black Iowa USA" state
pageants use their civic platform to promote
awareness of these issues during their reign and
are actively engaged in activities that promote
education, financial fitness, build character,
boost self-esteem and confidence, promote
healthy lifestyles and choices and also helps
young people to become actively engaged to take
charge of their lives and achieve success.
