Ruby Westmoreland Pate
(Formerly Ruby Westmoreland)
1993 Miss Black Iowa

Being a part of the Miss Black Iowa pageant was a life enhancing experience. Growing up, my mother encouraged me to participate in pageants. The pageants that were selected for me were always reflective of scholarly achievements. The Miss Black USA pageant demonstrates the true essence of the black woman and what we represent in our society.

My platform as Miss Black Iowa was "Ending the War Against our Children." This is a platform that I still hold strong too. After leaving college, I pursued a career as a special needs teacher for the Milwaukee Public schools. I served in this position for 8 years. I am now in the process of starting a non-profit agency which will address some of the issues that are missed by the public system when it comes to rearing our children.

As Miss Black Iowa I developed a voice that continues to ring strong today in my own home and my community. Through pageantry I have embraced the concept of can. I can. With my platform I understand the drive to steer change. Daily I instill self love and acceptance to all I encounter. For the past 1o years I have stood at the forefront for women and young ladies showing them the essence of natural beauty.
